Food Trip # 1 Coco’s Grill

Friday, October 31st, 2008

After the “idled moment”, we decided to go first at Lachi’s along Marfori Subdivision (Old AMA CC Davao City). I’ve thought that the “refreshment place” was a big place but unfortunately it was not but good enough for small meeting and hookips with friends. Enough for that, when we reached the place (not to mention the sarcastic encounter with the taxi driver, I forgot the taxi company but I was so sure, it’s one of the famous taxis in the metro), Lachi’s was not able to accommodate us for they were closed already when the time we reached the area.

But the four of us did not consider the scenario to be disappointed but rather we slowly walked and decided to find another place to cater the needs of our “hungry tummys”, hehehehe…. Since, we were near Torres, the place where well known for all types of food hang outs, we rode a tricycle and went to Coco’s Grill (formerly Regines). Honestly, it was my first time to visit the place and dined with my fellow faculty, but I used to be at that place during Regines Time. The place was cozy, cool, with halloween spirit, with warmed reception and not to mention, the sumptuous and “shall we say affordable” foods. There’s some bloopers with naming the foods, but what matters most, we have enjoyed every order we had.

I have some pictures here, but unfortunately, they were not that clear but good enough to have evidences that we really visited the place.

The author with Sir Eric Emberda… knife?

With Miss Kathy Dacanay and Miss Aurora Atilano…both of them are our new faculty

Gutom na sir…pose na lang muna sa camera…hehehe (with Sir Eric again)

Very good pizza with wine?…Try it for yourself…

Filipino style…talagang may maiiwan…

Introducing the Vampire Juice (Halloween Special Juice)

I am damn useless without the foods…hehehe

Surely, we’ll visit the place some other times. There were some foods there that really intrigued me (I’ll keep it as a secret between me and the menu book). Overall rating: Two Thumbs up!

It’s very difficult to be idled! I am sure to that!

STOP!

STOP!

I will just post some of the bloopers next time. There are 47 different idle moods of the faculty of different scenarios. Before I forget, the casts here are faculty members. (Take note, they are not exempted for “significant moment” like this)

Halloween’s Real Origin

Friday, October 31st, 2008

As I searched the google for the keyword “Halloween history“, here’s the best result that I have got.

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of “bobbing” for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints’ Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints’, All Saints’, and All Souls’, were called Hallowmas.

No matter how will you celebrate the Halloween, what’s  the matter most is that we have to exert effort and sincere prayer for those who have faithfully departed and really need our petition for their holy rest and fulfillment.

I missed blogging just for 1 and a half day. BTW,  I went to somewhere to fix some problems in my other task outside the school. It’s tiring but fulfilling.

It’s the first day of Mindanao Bloggers Summit in Gensan….Sashimi night<I am sure, it’s a good sashimi all the way from the Tuna Capital>. Tomorrow will be the last day of the summit intended for Summit Tour around the Tuna Capital and the Lake Sebu, did I hear it right?

Anyway, good luck to all participants. Have fun and enjoy the moment. For the organizers and volunteers, kudos to all of you for the job well done for initiating this wonderful event!

It’s important to consider the source when you get information today. Be skeptical.

Overview

You’re having a hard time figuring out a certain work or bureaucratic situation, but it’s because you’re not dealing with the right person. It’s a good time to rethink the whole plan from top to bottom.

Opt for the drama-free approach today and just ask people what you need to know.

Overview

Work problems could force you into a confrontation with the boss or a big customer — who won’t like what they hear. Stand your ground and speak the truth, or things will just get worse.

These are just my simple tasks this academic year…

1. I was elected as College Faculty Club Vice President for this academic year (I dunno why, I am too young for the task), but am not too visible in the meetings but more on behind the scenes support.

2. I was elected as Auditor for Council of Deans for IT Education in Region 11(CDITE). Last year, I was elected as PIO for Philippine Society for IT Educators in Region 11 (PSITE). I was given ultimatum by the officers for not attending the meeting twice…hehehe… There are so many activities to attend and prepare to this semester. To mention some, Monthly Seminar Workshop, Mindanao Conference on IT Education in Marbel (NDMU) this December 4-5, assisting as well the Mindanao Conference on IT Education for Students (look at the scope guys, it’s Mindanao), finalization of the OJT Manual for ITE students and etc…

3. I was asked to handle subjects in the Graduate School not to mention my other loads in the undergraduate programs and the undying concerns of our students in academics because of Task no. 4.  (Well Done for this area!)

4. I was reappointed by the University President endorsed by my Associate Dean as ITE Program Academic Chairperson (the roles really amazed me, I will tell you why in my next post about my amazing roles)

and I nearly forgot all task no. 1 and 2 because of task no. 4

5. Some extra tasks outside the schools — blogging, consultancies and others.

6. I nearly forgot as well my personal life…:(

Let’s see if could do all my tasks, if not excellently, fairly enough to please the one who voted/elected/appointed me before the academic year ends. If others would say, they have a superman spirit in them, I could proudly say that I have a spiderman spirit in me with great power comes a great responsibility.

Sidetrip…

And Lastly, Kudos to the organizers of the DigitalFilipino.com Club - Bloggers Networking Event Gathering at Grand Regal Hotel last October 21, 2008. Thank you to Ms. Janette Toral, the author of Blogging from Home for the gutsy initiation and as well thanks for the DFC members behind this event, to all bloggers and of course, our supportive sponsor - PAGCOR for the great accommodation and foods and drinks.
