2009 IT Olympiad Highlights - UIC Performance

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

First day

AM - QUIZ Bowl- University of Mindanao (Matina Campus) Gymnasium

Our very own team, Catherine Remolleno BSCS 4 (the last year’s champion along with Mary Grace Ignacio) and Aiza Loraine Mencidor BSIT 4 managed to lead the easy and moderate rounds but failed to maintain their leading during the difficult round. The questions were taken from PhilNits topics and standards. Knowing that the two were so busy with their projects and the lacked of preparations emotionally and intellectually but they nailed UIC in the top 5 best performing teams in this event. They just maximized their team efforts and individual expertise to survive the hurdle. Congratulations! I am proud of you ladies!

PM - Student Researches Presentation

For the faculty side, there was a MSW (Monthly Seminar Workshop) about FOSS: Free Open Source Softwares held at the Ateneo de Davao University. There were speakers from different IT industries that talked about this FOSS.

The whole session in the afternoon was allotted for different student researches (both defended/approved and ongoing) from the different colleges and universities in the region. There was a parallel session for the different presentations. UIC again has showcased their best in this area wherein 5 groups were sent to present, 2 from BSCS and 3 for BSIT. Aside from UIC, Ateneo de Davao University, UP Mindanao, and University of Southeastern Philippines have presented as well their best researches/projects. BTW, I was assigned to be the emcee in one of the venues.

Second Day

Whole Day - Programming Contest - Ateneo de Davao University

As usual, programming contest will consume the whole day. AM session was allotted for practice session and general orientation on the environment used in the contest such as the PC^2, and the languages used.

The afternoon session was the formal contest wherein 3 hours were given to the team participants to solve the 6 problems (ACM standard problems). Similar format of the problems were used in the National Competition.

To make the story short, with lacked of practices and coordinations due to some hectic and institutional events. The UIC Programming team has managed to maintain its 2007 performance in this event. We placed 2nd overall beating the other 13 teams in the region. Just a portion of minutes difference from the first place. UIC managed to solved 3 problems. UP Mindanao was the champion, Ateneo de Davao University was 3rd place and Notre Dame of Marbel University landed the fourth place.

Congratulations guys! You made us very proud of you!

Generally, the IT Olympiad this year has many pros and cons but the bottom line it ended with satisfaction knowing the number of partipating schools were no joke.

Congratulations to PSITE XI, CDITE XI, CHED XI and other generous sponsors for this successful and fruitful event!

Sharing your secrets is unwise sometimes!

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Sharing your secrets is unwise sometimes, because a blabbermouth will be listening!

You’re feeling a bit riled up over some recent trouble at work or at home and that might carry over into other parts of your life. Try not to inflict too much torment on those who don’t deserve it! (sometimes this is difficult to do especially when you love that person)

Hmmm…scary in a way! Beware those people that surrounds you every now and then, maybe they will be the one to bring in danger in one way or another, who knows?!

The title is unknown!

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

I am feeling pretty strong and happy, but someone sees me in a different light.

Show them that you’re not their doormat, but see if you can do it with a smile. That ought to show them!

Are you getting annoyed with a friend, but not sure how to let them know? A question that is difficult to answer and an action that is difficult to do.

Do yourself (and them) a favor and keep quiet about your frustrations. Just start spending more time with other people and either they will get the message or they’ll initiate a conversation about why things have changed. Then and only then will they be ready to hear the truth you have to tell — without going into any great emotional upheaval. Not everyone is ready to hear the cold, hard truth about their behavior.

Have a nice day everyone! Enjoy life!

printf(”Hello World! It’s Valentine’s Day!”);

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

Yesterday was Friday the 13th and it was the first Friday the 13th of 2009. So what? Believers of the ancient practices are always seeing this day as “day to avoid”. I really do not know the premise behind but history is always saying that something  significantly will happen everytime this day comes. Most if not all are avoiding number 13 because of its bad luck brings.

Anyway, I respect their opinions for that but one thing for sure, God has the full control of everything. Something happens because of His will and it has all the reasons behind. Let’s be more faithful and leave everything to Him or common saying that “Just do your best and God will do the rest for you!…

Yesterday as well was the celebration of Students’ Day, traditionally in preparation of the celebration of Valentine’s day in UIC, there were series of activities that took place for the students. It is a 2 day celebration. It is good time as well for the students to have their break from academic pressures and rush assignment even just in 2 days. The day filled with academic competitions among the different programs in the university. It was started with a bang with Mr. and Miss Valentines was the highlight in the morning right after the celebration of the holy mass. In the afternoon, all the academic events took place such spelling bee with a twist (contestant should spell the work backwardly, i really do not know the objectives behind!..LOL), survivor Philippines (UIC version), snakes and ladders, sodoku, rubik’s cube challenge, poem and essay writings competitions and others. The day culminated with a Band Competition in the evening.

Today is the last day of the celebration of Students’ day. The OSAD and SSG facilitated with Jobs Fair intended for graduating students and Clubs fair for the undergraduate students.

I am very sure, students are enjoying their day as well as for us mentors/professors, since this serves as our 1 day break from school. Good enough compared to nothing.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY EVERYONE!

The picture below is enough for the significant meaning of valentines. Celebrate it with love and faith. Love one another and let other people feel that there is really love somewhere out there.

Good Perspectives = Good Living!

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Get perspective. Putting things into their proper balance will keep you smiling.

You try to let go of an old habit or memory that has been bothering you more than usual lately. It’s one of those days when you need to clear your mind so you can make way for more goodness to come. Be an inspiration for others, be their light for change.

Happy Hearts’ day everyone!

My Inspiration!

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Helping others is also a way to help yourself to see things from a new perspective.”

Help…help…help…this make sense to me these past few weeks! Valentine’s day is fast approaching but for me everyday is a valentine’s day, everyday is a happy day, everyday is helping-others day. It should not be consumed in one day but all throughout. I wish that this time around the meaning of valentine’s day is worth remembering for, not just for personal interest but for the welfare of other people.

Advance happy hearts’ day everyone!

Unwinding with Sickness

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

It’s been a while or days since my last blog. I was sick for the past days and until this time I am still recovering my physical strength. Lucky for me that last week was not a serious week to have classes for my freshmen since the University President approved the 3-day special formation for ROTC in preparation for the annual tactical inspection held last friday. I dunno what’s the feedback of the inspection?

I just had my first batch of takers for my Midterm Examination in Programming last tuesday. But because of this fever of mine, I was not able to made it the second batch last thursday because of intolerable dizziness, flu and headache. So I have decided to give the exam this tuesday, lucky for them. I was absent for 3 days now. I need to regain my strength and focus to work on the pending admin. tasks last week and this for this week.

I felt sorry as well for Sir Eric (adviser) that I was not able to attend as panelist the BSIT 4 Project Presentation last Wednesday and Thursday. I’ve heard that there were groups who have made it but there were groups who were asked to re defense their output. Good luck still guys!

Highlight Activities this Month:

1. PSITE National Convention on February 26-28 in Dipolog City

2. Regional Wide IT Quiz, Programming Contest, Student Congress

3. 1st CARAGA ICT Congress

4. UIC ITE BSIT 4 Project Presentation, BSCS 4 Thesis Presentation, and BSIM 4 MIS Project Presentation

Anyway, it’s a good thing that you unwind for a good cause but for a sickness is no joke.

Take care everyone! Health is wealth!

“I’m Sorry” says by Michael Phelps Marijuana Bong Smoking

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Beijing Olympics sensation Michael Phelps of the USA engaged with marijuana? I saw this just this morning while watching the “Umagang Kay Ganda”, a morning show of the ABS-CBN before going to work.

You cannot really judge the person for his fame and outside personality. But the main thing is that everybody is prone to something unexpected. Is it enough to say “I’m sorry“? Yes, for the mean time but in the long run your good deeds and contributions to the society and to other people will be erased by one error in your whole life like taking a marijuana or mary jane.

Will it affect his campaign for another world-breaking records in swimming in the 2012 Olympics?
