The objective of the challenge is to use Open Source technologies such as Java Technology, JavaFX, NetBeans IDE, OpenSolaris, MySQL, GlassFish, Project Wonderland, Zembly and many others to develop cutting-edge applications for desktop, web or mobile, that will address key issues that organizations/countries face today, while fostering interactivity between communities on the Internet.

The winning team of the regional grand championship will be awarded US$3000 and a free trip to the next Sun Developer event held in the region!

Great news for us UICians and for the ITE Program!

The ITE Program have submitted two entries for this year’s challenge. Just this June 26, the JEDI team has announced the Final 14 or shall we say the Finalists for Philippine Challenge. The winner here will be sent to Singapore to compete for the Finals from Champions of Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

The good thing here is that the two teams from UIC-ITE Program have made it to the Final 14 and they will compete this July 14 at the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) in Quezon City and meet the other finalists from prestigious universities from all over the Philippines. I will be with them in Manila and serve as teams’  adviser. And we’re proud that we’re the only teams from Mindanao!

The two UIC-ITE Teams are the following:

Team 1: Team Sugo ni Bro!

Application: Fleet Management System using Zkoss Framework

Members:m Karlo Jesus Sobiaco, Patrick John Yap, & Abzkan Abdul - IT 4

Team 2: Team RoJoSe

Application: An AJAX-based Multi Website Management System Using XML-RPC

Members: Ronald Borla, Sean Lester Benitez, & Joseph Rey Sator - IT 4

These two teams are really complete in package, from technical skills to communication skills. But constant practice will make them more competitive in one way or another. Good luck and God bless to our competition.

Just an update: I had a wonderful talk with the JEDI Philippines Coordinator this morning and she told me that I should not be worrying the expenses because the fares and accommodations will be taking cared of by the Sun Microsystems.

I know that the learning experiences here for both teams would mean that our UIC-ITE Program education is not at par with the education from the prestigious universities in the country. This is a very good start as well to the program for its drive for academic excellence and mission of quality IT education in the country.

Congratulations again! Aim high always!

The legendary Michael Jackson Dies at the age of 50

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Michael Jackson’s brother says it’s believed that the pop star died of cardiac arrest.

Jermaine Jackson cautioned at a hospital press conference Thursday that the cause of his death would not be known until an autopsy was performed.

He said Michael Jackson’s personal doctor and paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his rented home in Holmby Hills. A team of doctors at UCLA Medical Center also tried for more than an hour.

Los Angeles police Lt. Gregg Strenk said at a separate news conference that police robbery-homicide detectives have been ordered to investigate, which is common in a high-profile case. Strenk says the coroner’s office, which will handle inquiries into the type of death, is taking possession of the body.

Introducing Apple’s Iphone 3Gs

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Another innovation from Apple is its newest and latest version of IPhone, IPhone 3Gs.

Here are the claims and purposely the best features of the phone:

The Fastest iPhone Ever

The first thing you’ll notice about iPhone 3G S is how quickly you can launch applications. Web pages render in a fraction of the time, and you can view email attachments faster. Improved performance and updated 3D graphics deliver an incredible gaming experience, too. In fact, everything you do on iPhone 3G S is up to 2x faster and more responsive than iPhone 3G.

Video

Images of the iPhone 3G S camera's tap to focus feature and the video camera interface.

Now you can shoot video, edit it, and share it — all on your iPhone 3G S. Shoot high-quality VGA video in portrait or landscape. Trim your footage by adjusting start and end points. Then share your video in an email, post it to your MobileMe gallery, publish it on YouTube, or sync it back to your Mac or PC using iTunes.

3-Megapixel Camera

The new 3-megapixel camera takes great still photos, too, thanks to built-in autofocus and a handy new feature that lets you tap the display to focus on anything (or anyone) you want.

Voice Control

Voice Control recognizes the names in your Contacts and knows the music on your iPod. So if you want to place a call or play a song, all you have to do is ask.

Compass

With a built-in digital compass, iPhone 3G S can point the way. Use the new Compass app, or watch as it automatically reorients maps to match the direction you’re facing.

Cut, Copy & Paste

Cut, copy, and paste words and photos, even between applications. Copy and paste images and content from the web, too

Landscape Keyboard

Want more room to type on the intelligent software keyboard? Rotate iPhone to landscape to use a larger keyboard in Mail, Messages, Notes, and Safari.

Messages

Send messages with text, video, photos, audio, locations, and contact information. You can even forward one or more messages to others.

Search

Find what you’re looking for across your iPhone, all from one convenient place. Spotlight searches all your contacts, email, calendars, and notes, as well as everything in your iPod.

Accessibility

iPhone 3G S offers accessibility features to assist users who are visually or hearing impaired. These features include the VoiceOver screen reader, a Zoom feature, White on Black display options, Mono Audio, and more.

Internet Tethering

Surf the web from practically anywhere. Now you can share the 3G connection on your iPhone with your Mac notebook or PC laptop.

Voice Memos

Capture and share a thought, a memo, a meeting, or any audio recording on the go with the new Voice Memos application.

Nike + iPod

iPhone includes built-in Nike + iPod support. Just slip the Nike + iPod Sensor (available separately) into your Nike+ shoe and start your workout.

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has cancelled the opening of classes in the tertiary level. Supposedly, June 8 was the start of classes but due to problems encountered,  health safety, and security issues specifically for the threats of AH1N1 viral infections.

Here’s the CHED’s Memo on the postponement of classes:
